Premenstrual Syndrome 02 – Types of PMS

Premenstrual Syndrome 02 – Types of PMS

Premenstrual Syndrome 02 – Types of PMS
]]>

As we mentioned in previous article, Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. The occurence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have more than doubled over the past 50 years due to the acceptance of it as a medical condition that is caused by unhealthy diet with high in saturated food. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women’s menstrual cycle, it effects a women’s physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. There are over 150 known symptoms of PMS and they can be classified in 4 subgroups.

1. Anxiety
Anxiety is a common symptoms for women with PMS, it is caused by hormone imbalance between estrogen and progesterone. Most women with PMS is found to very high levels of estrogen and low levels of progesterone before menstruation.

2. Craving
Some women with PMS may experience the symptom of food craving, it is caused by abnormal liver function in carbohydrate synthesis. Without coordinating between liver and pancreas, it causes high levels of insulin in the blood stream resulting in increasing the risk of sugar craving. Other theory suggest when a woman under stress before period, she may grasp for eveything which makes her feel more comfortable.

3. Hyperhydration
Breast tenderness or water retention are always a problem for some women with PMS. Breast tenderness is caused by over production of prolactin as resulting of abnormal function of pituitary gland. Water retention is either caused by inability of digestive system in absorbing of potassium or abnormal function of lymphatic function. Some theories also suggest that fluid retention is caused by high levels of serotonin.

4. Depression
Researchers found that women with symptom of depression always have unbalance levels of estrogen and progesterone as resulting of liver abnormal function of fat and protein metabolism. Without right levels of estrogen and progesterone, it causes nervous tension resulting in increasing nervous disorder including depression.

Since PMS is treatable and manageable by natural remedies and a self help course, if you have PMS, please look on the bright side

A pulse oximeter is a medical device that indirectly monitors the oxygen saturation of a patient’s blood instead of the blood oxygen being measured directly through a blood sample. Premenstrual Syndrome 05 – Premenstrual Syndrome ( PMS )- What causes Anxiety in PMS

Premenstrual Syndrome 05 – Premenstrual Syndrome ( PMS )- What causes Anxiety in PMS
]]>

As we mentioned in previous article, Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. The occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have more than doubled over the past 50 years due to the acceptance of it as a medical condition that is caused by unhealthy diet with high in saturated food. In this article, we will discuss what causes anxiety in PMS.

1. Hormone imbalance
For what ever reason, women with PMS are found to have high levels of estrogen and low levels of progesterone. It may be caused unbalance of omega fatty acid, deficiency of certain minerals and vitamins, digestive disorder in nutrients absorption, etc, resulting in increasing symptoms of anxiety of PMS.

2. Sluggish liver
Besides helping to detoxify the body and fighting against invasion of foreign substances such as virus, bacteria and abnormal cell growth, liver play an important role in providing nutrients to the nervous system in fat and protein metabolism. Unfortunately, most women with PMS are found to have a sluggish liver during menstrual cycle resulting in nervous tension leading to anxiety.

3. Nutrients deficiency
Deficiency of Omega 3 fatty acid or imbalance of fatty acid in the body during menstrual cycle as resulting of over consumption of saturated fat caused by interference of liver in fat and protein metabolism resulting in increasing tension of nervous system leading to anxiety.

4. Genetic passing through
If your sister has it, you may also have it. For what ever reason, anxiety during menstrual cycle seems to run in the family. It may be caused by high levels of estrogen in the pool gene or reaction of certain glands in production of hormone during menstrual cycle.

5. Environment toxins
Over exposure to toxic environment resulting in accumulation of xenoestrogen in the body during menstrual will lead to over production of bad estrogen and low levels of good estrogen to counter the reaction to the symptoms of PMS.

The PMS symptoms have enough severity to interrupt with some of the aspects in life. Premenstrual Syndrome can lead to psychological and emotional imbalances like frequent mood swings, depression, over sensitivity, irritability etc. An even severe symptom of PMS is referred to as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

The symptoms caused by PMS can be of great variety varying in intensity and duration from one cycle to another. The most common mood related symptoms as mentioned above are tension, depression, anger, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, hypersensitivity, crying etc. The common physical signs of PMS are changes in appetite, craving for food, gaining of weight, fatigue, sleeping disorder, acne skin, tenderness of breasts, bloating, cramps, constipation, muscle pain, joint pain etc. In case of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder the symptoms are so severe that it may lead to significant functional loss. But this Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder occurs in very lesser number of women.

The real cause for PMS is still an enigma. It is because of its diversified symptoms it is hard to determine the exact cause of Premenstrual syndrome. Family history is often considered to be a probable factor contributing to Premenstrual syndrome. Other factors leading to the onset of Premenstrual syndrome are intake of caffeine in high level, usage of tobacco. Stress can also precipitate such condition. So it is common among those having history of depression and bipolar disorder. Increase in age and dietary imbalance can induce this condition. If the diet is low in minerals like manganese, magnesium etc and Vitamins like vitamin E and vitamin B then it can be a resulting factor for PMS. However, most scientists believe that PMS results due to alteration in brain chemical and sex hormone. Some also like to believe that PMS is not related to psychological disorder.

Once PMS is firmly diagnosed there are several ways of treating it. The cure to it is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise can help a lot. If the patient is a smoker she should immediately quit smoking and take the help of a medical professional to treat this as soon as possible.

Premenstrual Syndrome 06 – What Causes PMS Food Craving

Premenstrual Syndrome 06 – What Causes PMS Food Craving

In this article, we will discuss what causes PMS food craving.

1. Sluggish liver
Maintaining a strong liver is vital for women with PMS, because liver helps in synthesis of carbohydrate and regulating the levels of insulin in the blood stream by transmitting information to pancreas. If the levels of insulin is too high, it tell pancreas to stop producing insulin and if the levels is too low, it tell pancreas to secret more insulin. Unbalancing blood sugar in the blood stream causes Foods and sugar craving.

2. Hormone imbalance
a) Adrenal gland
Women with PMS are found to have high levels of adrenaline which causes less production of progesterone leading to hormone imbalance and resulting in increasing the appetite of sweet and sugar products.

b) Hormone fluctuation
Hormone fluctuation and hormone deficiency, such as over production estrogen and little progesterone or over production of progesterone and less estrogen will increase the tension of nervous system resulting in stress and food craving.

3. Iron and Vitamins B6 deficiency
Some women with PMS during menstrual cycle are found to have low levels of iron and vitamin B6 resulting in increasing the risk of craving for for food not normally eaten and chocolate.

4. High levels of glucose tolerance
For what ever reason, women with PMS are found to have high levels of glucose tolerance such as increased appetite and craving for sugar and chocolate. It may be caused by stress and high levels of adrenaline. Some researchers argue that under stress, most women look for anything which can make them feel comfortable including sweet and chocolate.

5. Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency
Omega 3 fatty acid helps not only to regulate uterus muscle during menstrual cycle, but also helps to balance the levels of prostaglandins hormone resulting in lessening the risk of food and craving for women with PMS

Read useful Premenstrual Syndrome.

If you want to treat PMS without a pill, then you may look to natural methods of controlling this symptom from Mother Nature. There are things you can do to combat the effects of PMS once and for all. You can help prevent and reduce your symptoms and you can do so naturally.

Simple Tips and Vitamins for PMS

Fiber rich foods eat a lot of soluble fiber rich foods to prevent diarrhea and also prevent pre-period food cravings.
Saffron Add some saffron to your diet; this particular spice will help in increasing the serotonin levels which is a feel good chemical and thus helping in reducing you PMS symptoms.

Reduce the intake of salt Skip on food that has a lot of sodium in it. Our body tends to store sodium that can cause water retention and make you feel bloated. To prevent this reduce your intake of sodium processed food a few days before your cycle.

Medication if you have extreme PMS symptoms that don’t go away even after you do everything that you possibly can, and then it is best for you to consult a doctor and take some anti-depressants.

Yoga offers exercise, relaxation and stress management and hence is the best way to reduce the PMS symptoms both psychological and physical.

Calcium

Calcium can decrease PMS symptoms such as cramps, stress, and irritability by as much as half according to many studies. It is not always easy to drink four 8-ounce glasses of milk daily, and many of us fall short so supplementation is usually necessary.

Recommended intake of calcium is 1,200 – 1,500 mg per day. It is important to also take 400-800 IU of vitamin D daily with calcium to get the maximum effect.

Zinc

Studies show that low levels of zinc may contribute to the acne breakouts around the time of menstruation. Taking 15mg of zinc per day may help in keeping your skin clear since it is essential for tissue repair and helps reduce inflammation. Great sources of zinc are found in lean meats, poultry, fish and seafood, along with nuts, eggs and seeds.

Magnesium

Bloating and water retention is no fun, especially when you are trying to fit into your skinny jeans. These PMS symptoms can make you feel as if you gained 5 kilos overnight.

Magnesium intake of 200 mg per day can reduce this uncomfortable feeling of ‘feeling fat’. Beans, nuts, whole grains and green vegetables such as spinach are good sources of magnesium. Magnesium should be taken with calcium and vitamin D for best results.

Vitamin E

vitamin E can relieve breast soreness and tenderness, as well as irritability and depression. Wheat germ and olive oil, along with peanuts, seeds and broccoli are good sources of vitamin E.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 may help relieve depression, anxiety and mood swings linked with PMS. Recommended dose of vitamin B6 is 50-100mg per day. Major sources include: cereal grains, vegetables (carrots, spinach, and peas), eggs and meat.

Essential Fatty Acids

Include up to three meals per week of oily fish like salmon, halibut or albacore tuna in your diet or at least one tablespoon of flax every day to help combat depression, anxiety, bloating and even breast tenderness. Your skin will also benefit from this regime.
