Importance of Vitamin B6
Importance of Vitamin B6
One should have the information that vitamin b6 is actually a water-soluble vitamin which is a part of vitmain b complex group. Not only this pyridoxal phosphate which is a source of vitamin b6 is the active form and acting as cofactor in lots of reactions of amino acid metabolism like having transamination, deamination, and decarboxylation. So vitamin b6 helps in the enzymatic reaction supporting the release of glucose from glycogen in the body. One will also see that vitamin b6 called as pyridoxine for indicating its structural homology as pyridine. So all the three forms of vitamin b6 act as precursors of activated compounds called as pyridoxal 5′-phosphate, playing major role in number of essential enzymes of the human system.
The role of vitamin b6 shows its effectiveness for the treatment of PMS, PMDD, and clinical depression is still debatable. Not only this vitamin B6 is also experimented on schizophrenia and autism for showing its relevancy . There are several forms of vitamin b6 in the medical field suchas pyridoxine ,pyridoxine 5′-phosphate, pyridoxal, pyridoxal 5′-phosphate , pyridoxamine, pyridoxamine 5′-phosphate, 4-pyridoxic acid etc. The pyridoxal phosphate which is the metabolically active form of vitamin B6 is involve in various aspects of macronutrient metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, histamine synthesis, hemoglobin synthesis and function, and gene expression. Not only this vitamin b6 helps in serving as a coenzyme in many reactions helping in facilitating decarboxylation, transamination, racemization, elimination, replacement and beta-group interconversion reactions in the body. In human body the liver the place where vitamin B6 metabolism takeplace.
One will surprise to know that vitamin b6 helps in the conversion of tryptophan into niacin lowering vitamin b6 status in the body. Vitamin b6 keeps a major role in gluconeogenesis in the body. Also Pyridoxal phosphate helps in catalyzing transamination reactions which are important for providing amino acids to act as a substrate for gluconeogenesis. One can see that vitamin B6 is needed as coenzyme of glycogen phosphorylase which is that enzyme required for glycogenolysis for emerging along with Lipid metabolism . Not only this vitamin b6 act as an important component of enzymes facilitating biosynthesis of sphingolipids. The basic role of vitamin B6 is to remain as coenzyme in different enzymes in the body involving predominantly in metabolism. Its active form is converted into two other natural forms present in the food such as pyridoxal, pyridoxine and pyridoxamine etc.
Vitamin B6 shows its role in many metabolic processes like amino acid, glucose and lipid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, histamine synthesis, hemoglobin synthesis and function, and gene expression etc.
